Marshall County Marriage Certificates
Alabama records marriage certificates through the county Probate Court. The Marshall County Probate Office receives the original certificate for recording. This is not the old license-issuance model used in many states. The official route begins by confirming the current Alabama certificate requirements with the Marshall County Probate Judge's Office. The parties complete the Alabama marriage certificate, have signatures notarized as required by Alabama procedure, and deliver or mail it with the current county recording fee within the required time.
Probate Judge Andrea Lecroy oversees the Probate Court, Licensing Office, and Public Records Office. The Probate Office is at 425 Gunter Avenue, Suite 110, across the civic block from the Marshall County Courthouse in Guntersville. Call (256) 571-7764 or (256) 571-7732, or email probate@marshallco.org. A requester should confirm the current form, recording fee, accepted payment method, and mail instructions before sending a certificate. Probate Judge Lecroy also serves on the county election Appointing and Canvassing Board with Sheriff Phil Sims and Circuit Clerk Angie Johnson, though each office keeps a different record set.
Record Marshall County Marriage Certificates
The certificate process has two stages: recording the original with Marshall County Probate and ordering any later certified proof. A certified copy is often needed when an agency asks for official evidence of the marriage. Follow the official instructions rather than relying on an older description of a courthouse-issued license.
- Confirm the current Alabama marriage-certificate requirements with the Marshall County Probate Office.
- Complete the Alabama marriage certificate and provide the names and event details required by the official form.
- Have the signatures notarized as required by Alabama procedure.
- Deliver or mail the certificate and the current recording fee to the Probate Office within the required time.
- Request a certified copy from Probate, ADPH, or the Marshall County Health Department when official proof is needed.
Recording creates the county record. Ordering a copy is a separate transaction. Keep enough detail to identify the certificate later, including both names, the date of the event, and Marshall County as the county of the event. Those same facts appear on the state vital-record application.
Marshall County Vital Record Fields
The ADPH vital-record application is used for birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates. It is a copy request, not the instrument that creates a marriage or opens a divorce case. For marriage or divorce, identify both parties and give the event date and county. The applicant also supplies contact and delivery information.
| Field | Required | Format or purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Type of certificate | Yes | Select Marriage or Divorce. |
| Full names on record | Yes | Include both parties for the marriage or divorce. |
| Date of event | Yes | Give the Alabama event date. |
| County of event | Yes | Use Marshall County when applicable. |
| Applicant name and mailing address | Yes | Identifies the requester and delivery address. |
| Phone or contact | Likely | Allows follow-up if the request cannot be processed. |
| Relationship or eligibility | Varies | More important for restricted birth and death records. |
| Signature and payment | Yes | Certifies the request and pays the search fee. |
Accuracy matters. A certificate search can fail when a name, date, or county is wrong. ADPH treats the first payment as a search fee, and a failed search may produce a Certificate of Failure to Find instead of a marriage or divorce certificate.
Marshall County Certificate Search Fees
The Alabama Center for Health Statistics publishes statewide certificate fees. The first amount pays for the search and includes either one certified copy or a Certificate of Failure to Find. Extra copies at the lower rate must be ordered at the same time for the same record. Fees are nonrefundable.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Marriage or divorce certificate search, including one certified copy or failure-to-find certificate | $15.00 |
| Each additional same-record copy ordered at the same time | $6.00 |
| Expedited processing | $15.00 additional |
| Amendment or delayed record, per application text | $20.00 |
| Marshall County marriage-certificate recording fee | Confirm with Probate Office |
| Full divorce filing or decree copy | Confirm with Circuit Clerk |
For a mail request to ADPH, checks or money orders should be payable to “Center for Health Statistics.” Do not send cash. A Probate recording charge and a Circuit Clerk court-copy charge are separate from the state certificate fee.
Expedited processing is optional and adds to the base search charge. Ordering several certified copies of one record at the same time can use the additional-copy rate, while a later order begins with a new search fee. Before paying, confirm that the event occurred in Alabama and that the name, date, and county match the recorded certificate.
Search Marshall County Marriage Records
Use the Probate Office for the locally recorded certificate and county copy questions. The Marshall Probate online services portal advertises land-record and probate-case lookup, but the research found no marriage-specific search fields there. Do not assume that a marriage name search is part of that portal. Call or email Probate when the online landing page does not provide the needed certificate route.
ADPH offers a statewide path for certified Alabama marriage certificates. Its official vital-record channels include mail and an online vendor link. The government source should be used to confirm the current order process. The Marshall County Health Department can also issue certified copies of Alabama marriage and divorce certificates. The health department's phone is (256) 582-3174, and published hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The official health department image shows the county channel that can issue certified vital records. It comes from the Marshall County Health Department page.
That local option is useful when a certified certificate is needed without requesting the full court or probate file.
Find Marshall County Divorce Records
A divorce certificate and a divorce case file are different records. ADPH or the county health department provides a certified certificate for an Alabama divorce. That short record proves the event. It does not replace the pleadings, final decree, custody or support orders, settlement agreement, or post-judgment motions kept in the court file.
For the full Marshall County divorce case file, contact Circuit Clerk Angie Johnson's Albertville division at (256) 878-4515 or (256) 878-4521 and select divorce option 1. The Albertville courthouse is at 133 South Emmett Street, Albertville, AL 35950. Court status may also be available through Alacourt ACCESS, which offers paid searches by name or case number. For pleadings or a certified final decree, request the precise court document from the Clerk rather than ordering only an ADPH certificate.
| Alacourt control | Use for a divorce case | Access note |
|---|---|---|
| Name Search | Search by a party name | Paid search; an account session is required |
| Case Number Search | Open a known divorce case | Paid search; most precise route |
| Court / County | Limit the court context to Marshall County | Selection details appear within the account flow |
| Document Images | Check for available filed images | Separate image pricing applies |
| Case Monitoring | Track future case changes | Optional paid email-notification service |
Some family records are not open in full. Juvenile files are confidential under Alabama law, and court privacy rules can restrict sealed material and protected identifiers. A public divorce record may also contain redactions. Ask the Circuit Clerk what can be released and what proof an authorized party must provide.
Note: Divorce questions route through Albertville, while the public court-record search computer is in the Guntersville Circuit Clerk's Office.
Certified Marshall County Marriage Copies
Choose the issuing office based on the document. Probate can answer questions about a recorded marriage certificate. ADPH and the Marshall County Health Department issue certified marriage and divorce certificates for Alabama events. The Circuit Clerk supplies court-file documents, including a divorce decree when it is publicly available and the requester gives enough case detail.
- Recorded marriage certificate
- Use the Marshall County Probate Office for county recording and local copy help.
- Certified marriage certificate
- Use ADPH or the Marshall County Health Department for a state certified vital record.
- Certified divorce certificate
- Use ADPH or the county health department for proof of the Alabama divorce event.
- Final divorce decree or pleadings
- Use the Marshall County Circuit Clerk for documents from the full court case file.
Provide names, event date, county, and case number when known. Ask about the exact certification fee before sending payment. If the need is legal, confirm whether the receiving agency wants the vital certificate or the court-certified decree.
A full divorce file may contain a complaint, service papers, an answer, a settlement agreement, custody or support filings, orders, the final decree, and post-judgment motions. Those documents can provide detail that a vital certificate does not show. Access still depends on sealing, redaction, and confidentiality rules.
Alabama Marriage and Divorce Access
The ADPH Center for Health Statistics maintains statewide certificate access for Alabama births, deaths, marriages, and divorces. Its vital-record forms page provides the application for a marriage or divorce certificate. Use ADPH for certificate proof, not for the complete Marshall County divorce file.

For a certificate request, use the ADPH form and current payment rules. For the court case, contact the Clerk. That split prevents the common error of ordering a short certificate when the recipient requires the signed decree.
